Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Santa Maria public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
FY 2026-28 budget and structural deficit
The city adopted a two-year budget that leans on nearly all of its LEAF reserve and 37.8 more position cuts to balance year one. A half-cent sales tax on the November ballot is the main plan for closing the year-two gap.
Measure U Spending Outpacing Revenue
The committee oversees the city's voter-approved sales tax, first passed in 2012 and made permanent after a 2018 campaign. Its annual job is to check that the money raised and spent matches what the council promised voters, then report to the council.
Santa Maria 2045 General Plan Adoption
The city's blueprint for the next 20 years is now adopted. It plans for up to 16,140 homes and 24,000 jobs, including a 985-acre annexation — which means new schools, fire stations and parks will be needed, and some farmland will be converted.
